Tenemental reading and Q&A - University of Rhode Island, Dept of English

Vikki returns to her alma mater, The University of Rhode Island Department of English, for a reading and discussion of Tenemental. Truly one of the most enjoyable moments of writing the book was riffing on a slightly off-topic description of URI in the 1990s - white hats, Dave Matthews Band, rampant entitlement - and the existential confusion of being in that specific place at that specific time. (FUN FACT: one of the members of a local band popular at URI at that time, referred to as “hell on earth” in the book, actually got in touch to say hi - his wife was reading the book and she found this mention very funny. He was really cool about it all.)

ANYWAY, the event is in the Hoffman Room, Swan Hall, 60 Upper College Rd, Kingston, RI 02881. Free/open to the public, resplendent with refreshments, and wheelchair accessible.

Q&A with Lucas Mann about his book Captive Audience at Twenty Stories

Join us at Twenty Stories in Pawtucket, RI as Lucas Mann reads from his book Captive Audience: On Love and Reality TV. It’s an “appreciation of reality television wrapped inside a love letter to his wife, with whom he shares the guilty pleasure of watching ‘real’ people bare their souls in search of celebrity.” We’ll Q&A about the various ways “real life” can be performed: onscreen, for money and fame, and privately, for something perhaps less quantifiable. And we’ll talk/share neuroses about writing.

Twenty Stories is located in the Hope Artist Village at 1005 Main St. #8206, Pawtucket, RI 02860.

Memoir Writing Craft Session @ Ocean State Writing Conference

Vikki will be talking memoir craft at the Ocean State Writing Conference, which will be held at the main campus of the University of Rhode Island from Oct. 25-27, 2018.

In this one-hour craft session on memoir, we'll explore a variety of strategies for structuring a memoir, including selecting the stories that stay and cutting the ones that should go. Using examples from recently published memoirs, we’ll talk about the importance of voice, an element that can make an ordinary person’s lived-life story soar. We’ll also discuss writing about people other than ourselves—loved ones, ex-loved ones, and people with whom we aren’t close—and how to approach that tricky endeavor without fear or harm.

The schedule for this three-day writing conference is available at https://web.uri.edu/writing-conference/2018-conference-schedule/
